The Curtis Harden Lanham Family 1813
Curtis Harden LANHAM [1] [2] [3] was born on 18 Jan 1813 in ,,Kentucky , USA, a son of Sylvester and Jane (Estes) Lanham. He died on 28 Jan 1897 in Rockwall, Rockwall, Texas, USA. He was buried in Rockwall Cemetery, Rockwall, Rockwall, Texas.
Curtis married Margaret L. CHANDLER [4] [5] [3] daughter of John CHANDLER and Mary about 1843 in ,Andrew, Missouri, USA. Margaret was born on 15 Sep 1824 in ,, Kentucky, USA. She died on 16 May 1890 in Rockwall, Rockwall, Texas, USA. She was buried in Rockwall Cemetery, Rockwall, Rockwall, Texas.
She is a daughter of John CHANDLER, who was born 26 May 1802, according to the 1850 Andrew Co., Missouri census, in South Carolina, and MARY (maiden name unknown), according to the Andrew Co. census of 1850 was born in Tennessee, 14 December 1801.
The 1850 Andrew Co., Missouri census listed the John Chandler household as : Mary, wife; children, William age 17 born in Illinois, Nancy age 16 born in Illinois, Mary age 14 born in Illinois and John age 8 born in Missouri; also the family of Curtis Lanum and wife Margaret and Children, Thomas B., Hiram D. and William C.
Curtis Harden and family and the Chandlers probably came to Texas together with his father Sylvester in 1853. The Dallas County census of 1860 listed Curtis Harden Lanham, a blacksmith, wife Margaret and Thomas B., Hiram D., and William C.
A history of Rockwell County states, The Lanham family were early pioneer settlers of the community of Rockwall, Texas. William Curtis Lived on top of the hill near the homesite of Wm. I. Lofland’s new home. I believe that Mr. Lanham’s first wife a Bowles (Susan Bowles, dau. Of W.B. Bowles) and related to W.B. Bowles, who patented the 320 acres of land just west of the town of Rockwall. Benona Buford Lanham a son of William Curtis Lanham married a Willess and he his wife now reside on 302 West Rusk Street here in Rockwall. Uncle Benton Lanham lived on the corner of Kaufman and West Streets where Mrs. Tom Collum has recently built a new home. H.D. Lanham (Hiram Demarcus) lived just North of Rockwall. I remember his family quite well as I went to school with some of his children. They have a son Curt Lanham, who was the oldest child of the family, a son, Thomas Berry Lanham, a daughter, Mollie who married Emmitt Welburn and a daughter Alma Lanham. Alma and I were in the same grade at school. This family left here about 1906 and settled somewhere in Oklahoma (Martha, OK). Mr. Lanham’s (Hiram Demarcus) wife (Sarah) had previously been married to Mr. Scott and she was the mother of two children by her first marriage to wit: W.G. Scott a son and a daughter, and Fannie Scott who married Ed Holt.[6]
This is the first recorded indication of Lanhams belonging to a specific church since departing England. Thomas Benton Lanham joined the First Christian Church in Rockwall and Hiram Lanham, residing west of town joined the Church of Christ.
Curtis Harden is listed in both the 1870 Kaufman CO. and 1880 Rockwall Co. census as a blacksmith in the village of Rockwall.
