Michael Yost 1839 → Peter Logan Yost 1867 → Stephen Grey (formerly George Willis Yost) 1894 → Living Person

Michael YOST was born about 1839 in , Franklin, Pennsylvania, USA. He died on 19 Feb 1891 in Petersburg, Monroe, Michigan, USA. He was buried on 22 Feb 1891 in Petersburg, Monroe, Michigan, USA.

He enlisted [1] as Michael Yost, age 23, at Fairview, Ohio, on 6 Aug 1862; Honorably discharged 2 July, 1865 at Chicago, Illinois. Height: 5'8"; Complexion: fair; Eyes: hazel. Born in Franklin County, Pennsylvania. Occupation at time of enlistment: farmer.

Michael married Sarah C. GRIFFIN [2] on 28 Apr 1860. The minister was Jonathan Cumbaugh. Sarah was born on 08 May 1840 [3] in Baughman P.O., Wayne, Ohio, USA. Sarah died on 20 Dec 1931 in Maumee [4] Ohio. She was buried on 23 Dec 1931 in Petersburg, Monroe, Michigan, USA. Sarah died from pneumonia after a fall while sweeping an icy porch; she broke a hip, and said the confinement in hospital would kill her. [5]

An affidavit of Sarah Griffin’s younger brother, Mr. Frank Griffin, of Bowling Green, Wood County, Ohio, states he knew "Sarah C. Griffin all his life, as she was his older sister, and that he and Michael Yost attended the same schools and were raised in the same neighborhood in Baughman Township, near Berlin (Bertin?) City, Wayne County, Ohio. Knew Michael Yost to be in good health when he joined the war.

Michael and Sarah had the following children:

(i.) Son, John Wesley YOST was born about 1861 in , , Ohio.

(ii.) Son, Peter Logan YOST was born on 27 Sep 1867 in Petersburg, , Michigan, USA. He died about 1910 in , Illinois. Peter married Lulie Annie MUNN daughter of James Monroe MUNN and Annie Peabody BURCHMORE. Lulie was born on 25 Oct 1869 in West Fairlee, Orange, Vermont, USA. She died about 1910 in Newaygo, , Michigan, USA. She was buried about 1910 in Newaygo, , Michigan, USA. See The Peter Logan Yost Family for details.

(iv.) Son, Jesse James YOST Rev. was born about 1869 in Ohio, USA.

(v.) Daughter, Emma L. YOST was born on 10 Mar 1870 in Wayne, Ohio, USA. [6]

(vi.) Daughter, Matilda "Tillie" YOST was born about 1871/1872 in Ohio, USA. [7] [8]

(vii.) Son, Jacob Frank YOST was born on 24 Dec 1872 in , Wayne, Ohio, USA.

(viii.) Son, David Michael YOST was born on 16 Nov 1874 in , Seneca, Ohio, USA.

(ix.) Daughter, Ada Ellen YOST was born on 01 Jun 1877 in Ohio, USA. [9] [10] Ada Ellen Yost died abt 1950 and left him a small legacy, which helped buy the farm in N.C. It was several thousand dollars. According to a note from Stephen Grey [11], Ada Ellen Yost was the last surviving of 12 children, and she lived in Washington, D.C.; and Mrs. E. S. White was Clara A Yost, the youngest child.

(x.) Daughter, Clara A. YOST was born on 18 Nov 1879 in Ohio, USA. [12] [2] Her mother, Sarah C. Griffin Yost, lived with her on all censuses but one.

A newspaper clipping [Dec 1931] lists the children, assume in age order, boys first and then girls. J.W. Yost of Newark; J. Frank Yost of Des Moines, IA; David M. Yost of Cleveland, Ohio; the Reverand J. J. Yost of Fallbrook, CA; Mrs. Sarah E. Denny of Bloomdale, Ohio; Mrs. Charles P. Grenfel of Dodge City, KS; Mrs. S. A. Jones of Washington, D.C., Mrs. E. S. White of Toledo, Ohio. Not listed is Peter Logan Yost [#3 child] or Emma L. Yost, who appeared on 1880 as daughter born 1870.

The 1880 census matches with family stories, so Jacob Frank Yost [prob named after her brother, Frank]; David Michael Yost [family called him Michael, he went by Dave, Stephen Grey always called him Uncle Dave]; Jesse James Yost, became a preacher and used initials J.J. [can certainly see why, after the James boys made such a reputation]; Mrs. Sarah E. Denny, they called her "Libby", the E. was probably "Elizabeth" after her father’s mother. "Libby" is short for Elizabeth; Mrs. S. A. Jones was Ada Ellen Yost.

On LDS church [13] extraction records on IGI are Emma L. Yost, born 10 Mar 1870 in Wayne County, Ohio, Batch C514206; male Yost, born 16 Nov, 1874, Seneca County, Ohio, Batch #C514116; and Jacob Frank Yost, born 24 Dec 1872, Wayne County, Ohio, Batch #C514206.

Michael Yost died 19 Feb 1891, at his home in Summerfield Township, Petersburg, MI. Rev. Charles W. Baldwin, age 37, Pastor, Methodist Episcopal church, Village of Petersburg, Munroe County, MI presided at Michael’s burial.
