The J. E. Sisk Family
J.E. Sisk 1820 → Cassandra Minerva Jane Sisk 1841 → Cassandra married (1) James McHale and (2) Willis Ashley → Mattie Elizabeth Ashley 1880 → Mattie married Thomas Berry Lanham 1882 (see The Thomas Berry (T. B.) Lanham Family 1882)
J.E. SISK [1] was born on 05 Jan 1820 in , Stokes, North Carolina, USA. He died about 1896. He was buried in Old Winchester Cemetery, Blue, Bryan, Oklahoma.
After checking numerous census reports from Franklin Co., Tennessee, and Jackson Co., Alabama, we did not find the name J.E. Sisk, but each time only Julia E. Sisk, as the Head of Household and children listed, some of which if they belonged to this family probably died early in life, also were some children listed which is believed to be from other Sisk families.
We have no indication of J.E. Sisk’s occupation, and as can be seen from the life of J.E. Sisk, as written by his grandson, G. W. Ashley, he could not have stayed very long in any one place, and apparently the family did not always go with him, and this may be one reason his name did not show up on any of the census reports. We also suspect that he was buried in the Old Winchester Cemetery, Blue, Oklahoma, which is about 10 miles east of Durant, Bryant County, Oklahoma. The burial site was at that time inside the Choctaw Nation, Indian Territory. We assume this was written about the time of his death 1896.
J.E. married Julia Edith [1] before 1841. Julia was born about 1820 in , Franklin, Tennessee, USA. She died in 1899. She was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Rockwall, Texas, USA. Julia reported in the 1880 census that she doesn’t know where her mother and father were born.
J.E. and Julia had the following children:
(i.) Daughter, Cassandra Minerva Jane SISK [3] was born in 1841 in , Franklin, Tennessee, USA. She died in 1922 in of Martha, Jackson, Oklahoma, USA. She was buried in Martha, Jackson, Oklahoma, USA. Cassandra married (1) McHall about 1861 [4] McHall and Cassandra had the following children: (i.a.) Daughter, Walter (Waltie) E. MCHALL, born 3 April 1865 in Tennessee. [5] Waltie married Thomas Sisk on 30 July 1884 in Franklin,Tennessee. See [The_Thomas_Sisk_Family] for details. Waltie died on 6 June 1949 Franklin, Tennessee, United States. [6] Waltie was buried in June 1949 in the Sisk Cemetery, Estillfork, Jackson, Alabama, United States. [7]
(i.b.) Wilburn MCHALL born abt 1868 in Franklin, Tennessee. [8] Wilburn lived in Franklin, Tennessee during the 1880 census. See The James McHale Family for details.
Cassandra married (2) Willis ASHLEY, See The Willis Ashley Family for details.
(ii.) Son, Obediah SISK [1] was born about 1845 in ,, Alabama, USA. The story is that he was sent to the store one day and never returned. However he was reported as being in the Civil War and latter settled in Ohio.
(iii.) Daughter, Martha Elizabeth (Matt) SISK [1] was born 08 Apr 1851. [9] She died on 28 Jan 1920 in Royce, Rockwall, Texas. [9] She was buried on 29 Jan 1920 in Nevada Cemetery, Nevada, Texas. [9] Martha married (2) Frank ROBINSON [1] after Aug 1870 (the census showed her at home), and before 1880 (the census shows her not with her Mother’s household). Frank was buried in Nevada Cemetery. They had two daughters and one son; Daisy, Ella and Bill Robinson. See the Frank Robinson Family for more details.
(iv.) Daughter, Edith (Ead, Edie) SISK was born [1] in 1855/1857 [10] [11] in , Jackson, Alabama, USA [10] [12] She died on 24 Feb 1944 in of Rockwall, Rockwall, Texas, USA. She was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Rockwall, Rockwall, Texas.
Edith married [13] William Elexander Butler HORTON [11] son of S. W. HORTON and Martha Jennette BOWLING on 14 Oct 1875. William was born on 02 Jan 1856 in , Franklin, Tennessee, USA. He died on 21 Feb 1901. [14] He was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Rockwall, Rockwall, Texas, USA.
The 1900 Rockwall, Co., Texas census indicates that Wm. L. and Ead had eight children, with six living, three daughters and three sons:
-
Son, Oscar Horton, born 2 December 1878 in Tennessee. Oscar died 2 October 1950 in Rockwall, Rockwall, Texas. [11]
-
Son, Hollis Horton, born 18 March 1883 in Franklin, Tennessee, United States. Hollis died on 24 January 1939 in Dallas, Dallas, Texas, United States.
-
Son, Gordon Horton, born November 1885 in Tennessee. Married Julia Lee Taylor [12] [15] on 28 Nov 1909 [15] in Royce City, Rockwall, Texas. [15] Died 28 Jan 1970. [15] [16] Gordon and Julia had two children: Hazel May Horton (1910-1980) and Glen Birt Horton (1915-2012).
-
Son, Odie Horton, born July 1888 in Texas.
-
Daughter, Cora Horton, born 09 Oct 1891 in Royse City, Rockwall, Texas 1892 in Texas. [13]
-
Daughter, Ora Horton, born 13 September 1893 in Texas. She lived at home in Rockwall during the 1910 census. [12] She married a Taylor before dying at 17 years old on 14 Dec 1911.[17] The death certificate is signed by William E Taylor, apparently the brother of Gordon Horton’s wife Julia Lee Taylor. It is possible he was her husband at 22 years old to her 17 years old. According to the death certificate, Ora is buried in the Mount Zion Cemetery, in Rockwall County, Texas halfway between Royce City and Rockwall.
(v.) Daughter, Sarah SISK was born 1853/1855 in ,,Alabama, USA.
(vi.) Son, William L. SISK [1] was born in 1857 in ,, Alabama, USA. He died in 1933 in of Royce City,, Texas, USA. He was buried in Royce City,, Texas, USA. William married Martha (Mattie) Dora Ellen MCCASLAND on 21 Dec 1892. Martha was born in 1869. She died in 1960 in of Royce City, Rockwall, Texas, USA. She was buried in Royce City, Rockwall, Texas, USA.
(vii.) Daughter, Alice SISK was born about 1859. She was buried in ,,Tennessee, USA. Alice married James GIFFORD. James was buried in ,, Tennessee, USA. They had five children; Louanna, Elma, Jay, Alvie and Ada Gifford.
(viii.) Son, Jerry SISK was born about 1861 in ,, Alabama, USA. Jerry shows up at 19 years old in the John G. Collins household in the 1880 census.[11] He was buried in ,,Oklahoma, USA. Jerry married Mary J. COLLINS. Mittie was born about 1864. She was buried in ,, Oklahoma, USA. Jerry and Mittie had one son and three daughters; Robert, Kate, Nell and Betty Sisk.
(ix.) Son, James M. SISK was born on 18 May 1863 in Paint Rock, Jackson, Alabama, United States. He died on 16 Sep 1911 in of Valiant, McCurtain, Oklahoma, USA. He was buried in Valiant, McCurtain, Oklahoma, USA. James married Hester Levina Collins. [1] Mary was born on 16 Feb 1864. She died on 18 Aug 1910 in Valiant, McCurtain, Oklahoma, USA. She was buried in Valiant, McCurtain, Oklahoma, USA. James and Mary had one son and three daughters; Herbert, Maude, Dosie, and Carrie Sisk.
The 1870 census in Madison, Alabama shows Julia Sisk as 48 years old, putting her born about 1822 (in range), and the census shows North Carolina. Cassandra, with a last name McHall, at 28, puts her born about 1842 (in range) as a factory operator born in Tennessee (match), Elizabeth at 19, puts her birth about 1851 (in range) as a factory operator, Sarah at 17, puts her born about 1853, Eddie who is female, is 15, puts her born about 1855 (in range), William at 15, puts him born about 1855 (in range), Jerry at 11, means born 1859 (in range), James at 8, means born 1862 (in range), Walter at 4, means born 1866 (in range) yet she shows as under the McHall surname and born in Tennessee with Cassandra.
